How to play

Canasta is rummy for two teams of two with two decks and four jokers. Lay out melds, build canastas of seven cards and go out first.

  1. 1

    Partners

You play with the player opposite you.

Partners meld together: you can add to each other's melds.

  2. 2

    Your turn

    Draw, meld, discard.

Draw from the stock or take the whole discard pile. Then meld if you like, and end your turn with a discard. (Simplified: when the stock runs out, the hand ends.)

  3. 3

    Melds

At least three cards of the same rank.

Suits don't matter, runs don't exist. Each side has at most one meld per rank.

  4. 4

    Wild cards

Jokers and twos can stand in for any rank.

A meld needs at least two natural cards and may hold at most three wild cards.

  5. 5

    The first meld

Your side's first meld needs a minimum of points.

50 points to start, 90 from 1,500 and 120 from 3,000 (15 below zero). Put several groups aside and meld them together.

  6. 6

    Taking the pile

Meld the top card right away to take the whole pile.

Use natural cards of the same rank, or add it to your meld. With a wild card in the pile it is frozen: then you need two natural cards.

  7. 7

    Threes

Red threes are bonus cards, black threes block.

Red threes are laid out at once and replaced (100 each, 800 for all four). A black three on the pile blocks it for the next player.

  8. 8

    Canasta

Seven cards in a meld make a canasta.

Without wild cards it's natural (500), with wild cards mixed (300).

  9. 9

    Going out

With at least one canasta you may meld or discard your last card.

Going out brings 100 points (200 in one go). Then all melds count, the cards left in hand count against you. First to 5000 wins.
